Fighting for rights in the post-Covid era

In the context of a global pandemic, International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) will be celebrated on the 3rd of December under the theme “Fighting for rights in the post-Covid era”. This year’s theme has been selected specially to look in to the challenges, barriers and opportunities for people who live with disabilities during the time of the pandemic.

The Ratmalana Audiology Centre or fondly known as the RAC by its clients and the people in the area was set up 15 years ago to be the Centre of Excellence in Hearing and Speech therapy for the benefit of people with hearing, speech and educational difficulties.  The RAC had been providing free hearing screening of newborn babies born in government hospitals. The objective of doing so is to detect early any hearing impairments faced by them and to intervene early for better results and impact. Thereby reducing the negative impact from undetected or late detected congenital hearing loss which could lead to significant language and academic delay in children. Further the RAC provides free hearing testing, speech therapy and special education services to all students at the Ceylon school for the Deaf and Blind Ratmalana.

The centre specialises in helping manage hearing impairments in children & adults through amplification (hearing aids). Speech and language therapy services at RAC help children and adults with communication disabilities to overcome them and have shown promising results over the years. The Speech and Language Therapy services have been beneficial for people with communication difficulties such as; intellectual disability, persons with autism spectrum disorders, hearing impairment, stammering, various voice disorders, cerebral palsy, people with language or speech difficulties after a stroke, etc.

Special education services at Ratmalana Audiology Centre have helped many children who struggled to enter mainstream school setups or who struggled to keep up with the mainstream school settings, to manage easily and perform better in the school.

RAC is well equipped with state-of-the-art testing laboratories and equipment and an experienced professional team of clinicians.
