Three athletes, namely Tharushi Karunaratne, Ravindu Jayasundara and Nethmi Fernando, all recipients of the worthy scholarship granted by Crysbro, in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee (NOCSL), are currently making the country proud by competing at World Championships — the Junior Athletics and Wrestling.

Sri Lanka’s leading poultry producing giant Crysbro is proudly contended in applauding the three young athletes, who are taking part in the World Junior Athletic Championship and the World Junior Wrestling Championship this week.

“Being recipients of the NOCSL-Crysbro Next Champ Scholarship Programme, this is a great recognition and feat for the management at Crysbro, proving the effectiveness and drive the programme offers to all scholarship holders,” Amores Sellar, the Senior Manager, Sales and Marketing of Crysbro, stated.

Tharushi Karunarathne

Crysbro, along with NOCSL launched the Next Champ Programme, to identify and support 20 talented young athletes from Sri Lanka who are capable of bringing international recognition to the country.

“Achieving what they work so hard for is a feeling that spreads optimism among everyone involved in supporting these aspiring young athletes. We are more than elated and proud to witness three of our resilient athletes take part in these international events. With that, we wish good luck to these athletes and we are confident that they will bring victory to Sri Lanka,” remarked Sellar.

Taking part in the World Junior Athletic Championship in Nairobi, Kenya, are Tharushi Karunaratne and Ravindu Sithum Jayasundara.

Originally from the town of Kandy, Tharushi is currently training at the Digana Provincial Stadium along with professional athletes who represent the national team. She will be one of the two female athletes qualified for the Women’s 800m event and will be part of Sri Lanka’s first ever 4x400m Mixed Relay team.

Ravindu Jayasundara

She represents A. Ratnayake Central, Walala, a name synonymous in the field of school athletics. Her future plans are to continue athletics and higher studies, with an ambition of becoming a pilot.

Ravindu, from Kurunegala, studies at the Sir John Kothalawala College. He is currently training at the Welagedara stadium, and his ambition is to be a sound and qualified individual, while excelling in his athletic career. He will be running along with Tharushi in the 4x400m Mixed Relay event.

Nethmi Ahinsa Fernando will be representing Sri Lanka at the World Junior Wrestling Championship. Nethmi brings with her a commendable streak of No. 1 positions from competitions in the local arena, and hopes to bring the same notion of victory from the international arena.

‘Next Olympic Hope’, an extension of the Next Champ Scholarship Programme, was initiated to allow the public to support 20 young athletes selected from the NOCSL-Crysbro Next Champ programme, who have proven themselves through multiple wins in both the local and international arenas.

Through ‘Next Olympic Hope’,
