The practice of using children for begging has been continuing for a long time, but it seems to have increased significantly in recent times. Unfortunately, one can see many children around Colombo City now engaged in the practice along with adults.

It is indeed heartbreaking to see these children being forced into such a terrible situation. They should be studying or playing, not begging on the streets to survive. Many members of the public, moved by their plight, can be seen giving money to them or the adults under whom they seem to be begging.

However, though one might be moved to give money after seeing these children, the fact is that the practice will only encourage adults to use the children for begging even more. Children should not be forced to sit or stand in the hot sun or driving rain, in street corners or near shops, begging for money. They deserve far better. They deserve a childhood.

Authorities turn a blind eye

A nap on the sidewalk

No games, no shoes, and not very comfortable

Dragged into it against their will

Missing out on childhood

Children forced to be an accessory

Lives in the balance

Rain or shine, and possibly drugged
