Kandyan dancers perform at last year's Esala Perahera

‘Kap’ was cut early today at the Aluthnuwara Devale premises to denote the commencement of the historic Kandy Esala Perahera which begins on the evening of August 9 within the Sri Dalada Maligawa and devales and reaches the streets (without the participation of devotees) on August 13, continuing till August 22.

The ‘Kap’ would be taken in procession to Kandy, and then at the Dedimunda Devale within the Maha Vishnu Devale the Kap that was cut at Aluthnuwara would be cut into four pieces and offered to the four devales; those of the gods Natha, Maha Vishnu, Kataragama and Paththini. They, in turn, would plant the ‘Kap’ at 1.09 am on Monday (9) at the four respective devales.

The conclusion of the Aluthnuwara Dedimunda Devale Perahera signals the commencement of the Kandy Esala Perahera.
