Due to the rapid technological developments and the changes in the Japanese society, the demand for professional jobs in the ICT industry has grown rapidly, and it is forecasted that the demand will continue to grow in the future. Currently Japan is experiencing a shortage of professional work force to drive the country’s industries forward, and therefore the government of Japan has already taken many steps to attract highly skilled foreign professionals from potential nations. ICT has been identified especially as a field where foreign professionals can successfully contribute to the development of the country.

In Sri Lanka, on the other hand, there is a growing trend of learning Japanese language in order to consider Japan as a destination for future employment. Furthermore, thanks to the recruitment of Sri Lankan graduates by several ICT companies in Japan, it is known that Sri Lankan youth are having a high potential for engaging in the ICT related work in this country. This means, Sri Lanka has a great potential to provide skilled ICT Professionals to Japan provided that they are enriched with the required specialised knowledge on ICT and sufficient Japanese language proficiency coupled with a good understanding with about the Japanese society.

As a higher education body that focused on ICT education imbuing Japanese quality standards, our aim is to equip the future generation with one of the refined, technologically sound ICT Programmes in Sri Lanka, and to mold the promising young minds to be competent go-getters in the future world.

There are 3 ways of going to Japan for a professional Job:

(1) “Japanese Language School in Japan and a University Degree in Japan and a Professional Job in Japan”

(2) “Degree in Sri Lanka and Masters and/or Doctoral Degree in Japan and a Professional Job in Japan”

(3) “Japan-Oriented Degree Pathway in Sri Lanka and University Degree in Japan through Transfer System and a Professional Job in Japan”.

We have been offering the 3rd option for several years and successful students are now conducting their studies in Japanese universities. The first batch of such students are expected to join companies in Japan after they complete their education for this academic year. However, there were many requests coming from our key stake holders such as students, parents &teachers to introduce a degree programme which can be completed in Sri Lanka with a transformative approach to produce exceptionally skilled professionals who will meet the demand in the Japanese IT Industry.

In response to the growing demand for such requirements, we have just introduced a 4th option, which means a properly structured honors Degrees in ICT (two programmes) from a reputed university in the UK customising to make it to the level where any student going through the superior learning experience offered in this programme. And with students’ commitment & dedication, a well molded professional will be produced at LNBTI in order to meet high standards of the Japanese IT industry requirements.

During this honors degree programme we impart students with the skills required for the Japanese professional ICT job market which include adegree, Japanese language up-to N3 level and a good understanding about the Japanese society &business practices.

Mr. Koga Michio is the Chairman of Lanka Nippon BizTech Institute (LNBTI). He is also a founding member of the Metatechno Inc Japan a main software provider for many multinational companies in Japan including Canon Corporation. Metatechno Inc has a subsidiary in Sri Lanka since 2001, through which many Sri Lankan engineers joined with Japanese projects.
Prof. Ananda Kumara is a Sri Lankan researcher residing in Japan and was the Founding Dean, Faculty of Foreign Studies at Meijo University in Japan. Some of his past involvements include in Lever Brothers Ltd (Sri Lanka), Kelaniya University (Sri Lanka), United Nations Center for Regional Development (UNCRD), and Suzuka International University and Tokyo Institute of Technology. Prof. Kumara was awarded the prestigious Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) President’s Award for the year 2020 for his valuable contributions in Japan. Prof. Kumara was the first foreigner living in Japan & the first Sri Lankan to be awarded with this prestigious award. He also serves as a member of the advisory board at LNBTI.
