Gateway juniors excel in squash

Manuth Dassanayake (U-11) and Bihandu Nanayakkara (U-13) of Gateway College Colombo won the Age Group Championships at the recently concluded Junior National Open Squash Championships played at the SSC
sports club.

Five students of Gateway College, Colombo took part in this tournament. Manuth won the U-11 Championship and was placed 3rd in U-13. At the U-11 Final, he beat Kaveen Kohombange of Stafford International School 03-01 - (11-6) (12-10) (7-11) (11-8). He also beat Shehara Dias of St. Joseph’s College 03-02 – (8-11) (11-6) (11-7) (9-11) (11-3) who secured the 3rd place.

Bihandu playing the final with Tharul Pinwatta of Royal College, won by a margin of 03-00 – (11-2) (11-2) (11-3). He also played in the U-15 tournament and was placed 5th following a walkover from Rilwan Mohammed of St. Joseph College.

Playing U-11 Novices, Oshadha Udumalagala secured the runner up position losing to
Risindu Perera of St. Peter’s College.

Having an in-house Squash court, the sport is growing in popularity at Gateway College, especially among the youngsters. These outstanding results have been possible due to the efforts of the Coach C.H. Thalagala who has been responsible for training the juniors from the very beginning.
