The University Grants Commission (UGC) will release guidelines next week for the re-opening of all state universities amid the COVID-19 situation in the country.

The Health Director General has already given the approval for the re-opening of universities. UGC Chairman Sampath Amaratunga said they hope to first re-open universities before conducting examinations.

Thereafter they hope to bring in the students in batches, and priority will be given to fourth year and final year students, he said.

All lecturers too would be called back for duties and hostels will be re-opened, he added.

He said the vice chancellors have also have given their consent for the re-opening.

Arrangements will also be made to provide facilities for PCR testing, and the required staff and equipment will be available in the universities.

“The guidelines will be strictly enforced wherever common facilities are made use of,” Prof. Amaratunga said.
