Kandy Municipal Council is determined to do away with polythene bags for shopping and they have decided to give away 25,000 “environmentally friendly” bags to people living within the municipality.

The KMC has spent Rs. 3,875,000 for these shopping bags, which are cute and practical, a spokesperson said.

The Kandy Municipal Commissioner S. Navaratne said these bags could be washed and used several times for several months.

He also said steps have already been taken to train people to produce these eco-friendly bags, under a self-employment project within the municipality.

The first allocation of bags was presented by Kandy Mayor Kesera Senanayake at the D. S. Children’s Library premises.
