Residents in Nugegoda have called on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to conduct an investigation into alleged illegal constructions that are causing flooding and cutting off access to a new exercise track.

More than 80 residents have written to the President, pointing out that construction work has blocked drains carrying rainwater and wastewater, causing water to back up and flood the area, creating pools of stagnant water.

The letter states that the constructions are also depriving residents of easy access to an 800m exercise track in Pepiliyana due to be opened shortly. Residents living along the High Level Road in Jambugasmulla, an area that includes Nalandarama Road, Ananda Road, Melder Place and Tissa Mawatha, are affected by the construction work, which the letter alleges is unauthorised.

The disaffected residents have also written to State Minister Urban Development, Coastal Conservation, Waste Disposal and Community Cleanliness, Nalaka Godahewa.
