Last week, the Cabinet approved a proposal by the Ports and Shipping Ministry to have maritime training programmes for Ports personnel, to ensure speedy development in its services.

Accordingly the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) would join hands with the Mahapola Port, Maritime Academy Ltd. and CINEC campus (a maritime training institution) to promote naval proficiency in the ports.

Under this programme the Sri Lanka Ports management and consultation services  (SLPMCS) would plan and hand over maritime training programmes to create a disciplined work force in ports and naval sector industries.

Also it would provide the necessary finances for trainees that enroll for courses. Promoting marine officers in foreign territories had also been planned.

At present the Mahapola Port and Marine Academy, along with the  SLPA, are conducting the programme.
