Last week, the Sunday Times published a letter from former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s lawyers responding to comments made by former President Maithripala Sirisena in an interview published in the newspaper’s Political Column of December 27, 2020 and giving an explanation to numerous allegations made by Mr. Sirisena.

The letter also stated that those comments were false and malicious and made with the objective of defaming Mr. Wickremesinghe in an attempt to hold him to ridicule and lower his esteem in the minds of the public.  This account was based on a tape-recording interview which was reported accurately.

In view of the above circumstances and Mr. Wickremesinghe’s said explanations that a Parliamentary Committee (Committee on Public Enterprises – COPE) and the Presidential Commission of Inquiry had inquired into the bond transactions and had not made any findings against Mr. Wickremesinghe, we retract the allegations made by Mr. Sirisena against Mr. Wickremesinghe published on 27th December 2020.

(This is published on a request by Mr. Wickremesinghe’s lawyers on his behalf)
