More than 38,000 Sri Lankans have been badly affected and one has died in seasonal rains that began to drench Sri Lanka this month.

The northeast monsoon has damaged three houses completely and partially wrecked 66 homes of 12,100 people in the Northern, Eastern, North Central, Uva and Central provinces, the Disaster Management Centre reported.

The Department of Metrology forecasts that downpours will continue particularly in the Northern and Eastern parts.

Forecasters predict ‘heavy rainfall’ over North and the Southwest and people are being alerted to strong winds as well as lightning during thunderstorms.

Misty conditions can also be expected in Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces in the morning.

The seasonal monsoons usually last until February.

The Met Department’s director of forecasting, Anusha Warnasuriya, told the Sunday Times, “as the Northeast monsoon is established, rains are expected at the weekend. She predicts higher rainfall.”

Showers could occur in the Northern, Eastern, and Uva provinces. Some parts of these provinces will receive heavy rains, along with thunderstorms, and lightning.
