Competence via a Master’s Degree in Teacher Education offered by The Open University of Sri Lanka
View(s):The Department of Secondary and Tertiary Education of the Faculty of Education at the Open University of Sri Lanka calls for applications for its new intake of students for 2021/2022, for the Master of Teacher Education Degree (MTE) Programme.
The aim of the MTE Programme is the enhancement of the professional competence of personnel engaged in teacher education. Taking in to account the professional development needs of practicing teacher educators in the field, this programme is offered for teacher educators serving in institutions under the Ministry of Education and Faculties/Departments of Education in Universities and other educational institutions. It is offered in Sinhala, Tamil and English media.
The minimum duration of the programme is one academic year consisting of two semesters. The MTE programme comprises six courses which focus on various roles of teacher educators: a teaching-learning specialist, curriculum developer, educational technologist, educational leader and manager, educational researcher and a professional. A unique feature of this programme is its pedagogical design – Scenario-Based Learning, which promotes a more learning-centred and a context-driven focus, shifting away from the traditional content-driven and examination oriented approach. In adopting this authentic learning approach, the courses in the programme seek to make the learning of facts, principles and procedures more meaningful and productive.
The programme effectively uses a mixed-mode delivery using print, multimedia and online resources, with interactive contact sessions and blended online learning environments, supporting collaborative and cooperative learning. There will be no final written examinations in any of the courses. The final assessment shall be through continuous assessments, in the form of a series of mini projects. The MTE programme also incorporates the completion of a Learning Portfolio project, which encourages reflective practice among the practitioners. This innovative, practitioner-oriented programme offers a valuable opportunity for teacher educators to develop competencies to effectively function in their professional practices to fulfil the 21st century learning needs.
