For others, it might be a genuine desire to continue with academia for the joy of learning and conducting research. Regardless of your reasons, acquisition of ‘knowledge capital’ is no bad thing, and if you are looking for a place to get started, the University of Colombo is currently accepting applications for the following postgraduate programs.

Master of Science in Molecular Pathology

This is for you, if you are a Scientist, Researcher, Doctor, or Consultant Pathologist with a MBBS, BDS, BVSc or an equivalent degree from a recognised institution or a BSc in Biomedical Science or an equivalent.

The program will cover topics such as molecular technologies including cytogenetics, molecular genetics, molecular cytogenetics, and bioinformatics over the course of two years. Conducted by the academic staff of the Human Genetics Unit/Department of Anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, you will have the luxury of being tutored by the leading practitioners in genetics and genomics in the country who are part of the global genomic medicine collaborative (G2MC).

The assessments would consist of written and practical assessments in module 1 to 7A after which you would carry out a research project, write a dissertation and defend your dissertation followed by a viva.

Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety

To be eligible for this program, you will need to have a basic degree related to health or any other diploma from a recognized university/institution or an equivalent qualification related to health (recognized by the faculty board of FMUC) with 5 years of work experience in a healthcare setting or Professional qualifications in health from recognized professional body acceptable to the faculty board of FMUC with 3 years of work experience.

Designed with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals in mind, it is a one-year online program conducted by the Department of Microbiology. It aims to train healthcare professionals about patient safety, including how systems impact on the quality and safety of health care. It also addresses the issues related to poor communication, medication errors, team work, infection control, safety culture leading to adverse events. The expert resource groups will discuss ways to manage these challenges and how to develop strategies to prevent errors using real time case scenarios. This will enable participants to respond to errors and complications and to evaluate results to improve performance in the long term.

Postgraduate Diploma in Gender and Health

Designed for Doctors, Health Administrators, Allied Health Professionals, Social Scientists and any other interest groups, this is a program designed for those with a passion for gender and health.

Over the course of one year, the program aims to recognize the importance of gender as a social determinant of health, identify gender differences and inequalities that affect the health of individuals and to distinguish between the gender differences and patterns of morbidity and mortality in men and women in relation to specific diseases.

It also covers the gender differences of healthcare professionals in the work environment and harness that knowledge for improved output, appropriate responses to gender-based violence (GBV) and seeks to promote the integration of gender as a social determinant of health into policy development, research, health services, resource allocation and project and programme planning, monitoring and implementation.

Training Program in Clinical Genetics

Designed for medical professionals with an MBBS degree registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council and at least two years of work experience in a healthcare setting, this course provides hands-on experience.

This three-month course aims to provide an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the core concepts in clinical genetics and genomics and their applications in medicine and healthcare. It provides training in understanding the effects of chromosomal abnormalities and genetic variations on human health and disease, the use of clinical evaluation and genetic testing in the diagnosis of genetic disorders and risk estimation, selecting appropriate genetic and genome-level diagnostic tests, interpreting results and providing accurate genetic information and advice to patients, their families and the public at large.

A final assessment conducted at the end of the course will comprise multiple-choice questions and an objective structured practical examination (OSPE). Candidates who are successful at the final assessment will qualify for the certificate.
