CTU: National Institute of Education lacks qualified personnel for syllabi preparation

The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said the National Institute of Education (NIE), the body responsible for preparing all syllabi for 10075 public schools in the country, lacks qualified personnel to prepare the proposed new school curriculum.

The Sunday Times learned that the institution uses the services of university professors and senior and assistant lecturers from local universities to develop the syllabi for schools.

CTU Secretary Joseph Stalin said these personnel do not have sufficient expertise to develop the curriculum and most often dilute the content or veer away from it.

He said school principals and officers of the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service (SLEAS) who are the right people for the job had refused to take up these duties at the NIE as the positions offered are not pensionable.

As a result, the institution lacks qualified personnel to draft the new syllabi which was to be introduced soon, Mr. Stalin said.

The CTU called on the Education Ministry to use competent personnel to prepare the new syllabi so the change will be effective for future school children.  -CC)
