The Sri Jayewardenepura University conducted 200 PCR tests this week to identify those infected with the COVID-19 virus after the Health Ministry requested universities to conduct the tests. The Ministry issued this directive after the number of COVID cases began increasing, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Sampath Amaratunge said. He said the Health Ministry Secretary had requested to allow medical faculties to assist in conducting PCR tests, and he requested all Vice Chancellors to oversee this.

Accordingly, PCR testing would be done at the Sri Jayewardenepura University medical faculty, the Colombo University’s medical and science faculties and the medical faculties of the Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Kelaniya, Jaffna and Eastern Universities.

“Sri Jayewardenepura university’s laboratory testing is linked to internationally recognised laboratories such as the labs at Oxford and Harvard. We have consultants and PhD students who are guiding the technical staff involved in these PCR tests,” said Prof. Amaratunge. -Nadia Fazlulhaq
