COVID-hit Gampaha to see more rain in coming days

With heavy rainfall and strong winds being forecast this week, the Gampaha district, under a partial lockdown following the detection of a COVID cluster, will be among the areas that will experience bad weather, the Meteorology Department said.

Director (Forecasting) Merril Mendis said the northeast monsoon had been activated due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.

“Heavy rainfall of about 100mm can be expected in Sri Lanka’s southwestern parts, central hills and the Sabaragamuwa Province in the coming days. The Colombo district will also receive heavy rains any time of the day,” he said.

The director said showers or thundershowers would also occur in Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces at night.

People are requested to take precautions to minimise harm from strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Mr. Mendis said a rough-sea advisory had been also issued to naval and fishing communities, warning them against venturing into deep sea areas.

In a statement, the Met Department said, “Strong or very strong gusty winds with heavy rainfalls and rough or very rough seas can be expected over north of Andaman sea and East-central Bay of Bengal Sea area during next few days.”
