Chinese delegation came under ‘air bubble’ concept

The visit of the Chinese delegation generated controversy after it was revealed that the delegation will not be subjected to quarantine.

The Government justified the decision on the ground that it was a high-level delegation and was only in Sri Lanka for less than a day. Instead of mandatory quarantine, the delegation was subjected to a new COVID period pre-agreed “travel bubble” arrangement, meaning select dignitaries from countries are allowed free movement.

“All delegation members had passed PCR tests before they boarded the chartered flight to Colombo. They stayed at a restricted floor of a local hotel and followed all health guidelines and regulations by the Health Ministry during their 18-hour visit. All members had been vaccinated, and wearing N95 mask, keeping social-distancing,” the Chinese Embassy said yesterday.
