The Peliyagoda Urban Council chairman has assured council members that an inquiry will be held into the missing deeds of more than 200 acres of lands coming under the council’s purview.

UC Chairman K.D. Chandraratne gave the assurance when SLFP council member Ananda Pushpakumara raised the matter at a recent council meeting.

Mr Pushpakumara pointed out that the deeds of 100 plots of lands of varying extent had gone missing and as a result the council had lost a revenue of more than Rs 100 million.

Some of these lands were located in highly residential areas or areas of commercial value in places such as Waragoda, Nuge Road, Parakrama Road, Abeysinghe Road and Nawaloka Grounds Road.

During the debate, it transpired that the four-acre Vijaya Kumaratunga playground’s deed was with the council.

The chairman explained that some of the former chairmen had distributed the lands among their close associates and that he had been holding the position only for the past two and half years.

He said the issue would be reported to the investigations unit at the President’s Office.

He said a probe on the missing deeds would be launched soon and action taken to regain the lost revenue.
