The Education Ministry has planned to immediately introduce a mark scheme for students engaging in sports activities.

Education Reforms State Secretary Upali M. Sedere told the Education Times the scheme is to be launched under the theme “Healthy Citizens”, and sports will be made a compulsory subject in schools.

He said the World Health Organisation had discovered that 25 percent of students suffer from obesity, heart issues and diabetic conditions due to unhealthy lifestyles.

He also said from Grade Six onwards it would be compulsory for students to participate in sports, and they would be required to continue with the activity until they leave school.  The mark scheme would be introduced so O/L and A/L students would be entitled to gain additional marks.

Mr Sedere also said the school health system too would be improved under the scheme, to improve the health of the students.
