Segar holds 50th art exhibition

Well known artist Segar will hold his 50th solo exhibition at Rosmead Place by Thilanka next weekend- September 19 and 20. The exhibition is open from 9 a.m – 6 p.m.
D. Rajasegar who signs his paintings as Segar started his career as a production clerk in a company, which produces soft drinks, frozen meats and milk products. To relieve the monotony, he started to scribble his thoughts on any piece of paper he could find. Subsequently, he made handcrafted greeting cards depicting life in Sri Lanka which he placed for sale in bookshops. These greeting cards were soon snapped up and with the growing demand, Segar decided to resign his job and devote his time to his hobby.
Some who bought his cards wanted to see his art in large canvases and as he had little to no knowledge of painting on canvas, Segar started reading up on art and artists at the British Council Library in Colombo. He realized that he should create his own style. Since his favourite subjects in school were physics and mathematics, he started to experiment in his paintings with the refractive effect of light when it travels through different densities. He kept experimenting and the art critics were impressed.
His first oil painting was the Rickshaw Man.
His paintings gained more recognition when they were exhibited at renowned artist Senaka Senanayake’s art gallery at Ceylon Intercontinental Hotel (now Kingsbury).
Segar will be donating 20% of his earnings at the exhibition to the COVID-19 pandemic relief programme in Sri Lanka.
