If you find yourself using a laptop for most of your daily routine and you also tend to watch movies and listen to music, you might not be satisfied with the speaker that come baked into your laptop. And that’s perfectly normal. Unless you forked over an arm, a leg and a kidney to pay for a laptop, your laptop has a set of basic speakers. Now don’t get me wrong. Having basic speakers in a laptop isn’t bad. In fact, most users are satisfied with the speakers that come with their laptops. But for those looking for some extra volume and kick from watching movies will be on the lookout for a pair of external speakers.

Now comes the fun part. Do you go all out and buy a pair of high end speakers? Well, you can. That’s entirely up to you But today we’ll be looking at a much cheaper alternative. Enter the Logitech Z120. An inexpensive pair of speakers that aims to double as a replacement for your laptop’s speakers and can also fill the void if you want a pair of inexpensive PC speakers as well.

The key benefit of the Logitech Z120 is that it’s powered by USB. So there’s no need for you to have power cables trailing around your table, especially if your workplace is small/constricted. The speakers themselves pack a small footprint, measuring around 110 mm x 90 mm x 88 mm and weighing just a quarter of a kilogram, or around 250 grams. In terms of looks, they have a panda-esque feel going for them with a black interior and white exterior. In short, they look cute and compact. Build quality is also sturdy, in accordance with the quality of a Logitech product. If you haven’t used any of the Swiss company’s products, then you’re missing out on high quality products.

As stated above, the Logitech Z120 is powered by a single USB port. Connectivity is taken care of by a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio. On the other hand, because it’s powered by USB, you will have to free up a USB port on your laptop or desktop device. But you can also hook it up to a powerbank if you want to take the speakers with you and use it a portable audio player or your phone. Both power and volume are controlled by a single swivel knob on the right speaker. A small yellow LED indicator lights up to show that the Logitech Z120 is powered on.

In terms of sound output, these are USB powered so the output won’t be mindblowing. Each speaker is rated at 1.2W RMS. While this may sound weak, it’s actually loud for its size. It’s not going to deafen your eardrums, but given that it’s aimed as a replacement for laptop speakers, it does the job quite well. I tried a variety of music genres from hip hop, rap, metal, rock and pop, and the Logitech Z120 handled each to the best of it’s abilities. There’s no thumping bass but just enough, given the output and size of the speakers.

Overall, for a price of just LKR 2,500/-, the Logitech Z120 offers just what you would expect for the price. It’s affordable, compact and offers great unmatched sound quality for the price. If you’re looking for a pair of cheap inexpensive speakers that also sound good, give the Logitech Z120 a go.
