A proposal has been submitted to the Cabinet to pay a special allowance to teachers involved in paper marking, in addition to the existing payments they receive, a senior Education Ministry official said. An allowance over Rs. 10,000 has been proposed.

“The objective is to encourage more teachers to take part in paper marking, as some of them have to travel to Colombo from the outstation areas,” the Ministry official said.

Currently they are paid Rs. 1,200 per day, he said.

The official also said, usually about 10 answer scripts can be marked by a teacher per day, and currently a low number of teachers are taking part in paper marking.

“Even if teachers come to Colombo from outstation areas, they are not provided with a special allowance for travelling.

Therefore the idea behind the proposal is to increase the number of teachers and expedite the release of results,” the Ministry official said.

Cabinet approval is awaited in the next couple of weeks, for this proposal.
