The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC) initiated a programme in collaboration with its Athletes’ Commission to scrutinize athletes effected by the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and to swiftly make appropriate arrangements.

The General Secretary Maxwell de Silva revealed that the NOC has advised the Athletes’ Commission to look into and inform the NOC of any athlete who are undergoing difficulties or restrains due to the pandemic.

“We initiated this programme during early April to look into the athletes’ wellbeing. Accordingly by most athletes are well aware of the programme and last week we were informed of an athlete from the Puttalam region, who had been going through a tough time to find goods to survive the day. The NOC acted promptly to provide with all necessary needs,” de Silva stated.

He further revealed that the initiative will be active even after the ‘red alert’ of the Coronavirus pandemic is lifted, as they are highly concerned of the wellbeing of the athletes as well as all sports.

De Silva further elaborated that even the NOC is finding it hard at times in communicating with relevant officials and athletes due to certain restrains that are beyond control.

“However we are on the alert and are keeping the programme intact until we feel its necessity. At present, the NOC is on full alert day and night,” he added.
