To fight the corona battle, ventilators are being produced by a multidisciplinary team of specialists from the Peradeniya University’s medical and engineering faculties in collaboration with the National Institute of Fundamental Studies in Kandy.

According to Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Professor Vaanthi Pinto, the spokesperson for the specialist team, they had come together to produce ventilators as they were vital for the treatment of critically ill COVID patients.

Professor Pinto says Sri Lanka had experienced doctors and health sector officials to treat any critically ill patient, but there was a lack of ventilators. She said ventilators were needed to manage the complicated respiratory insufficiency in the treatment of COVID 19 patients.  At present, ventilators are in short supply or out of stock in companies that produce them. The cost of a ventilator is about Rs 3,000,000.

Therefore, the specialist team has decided to produce the ventilators locally due to the dire necessity, she said.
