From more than 10,000 applications for top slots in State-owned Enterprises (SOEs), most of them not suitable even for ordinary state jobs, 824 persons have been selected after they were vetted by a six-member committee, an official said.

Committee member Nalaka Godahewa told the Sunday Times that of the 824 selected applicants, 175 were appointed to chairperson and other senior posts. He said top vacancies in a few more institutions would be filled soon, as the committee had finalised the nominations by the end of January.

Apart from Dr. Godahewa, the committee headed by senior public officer Sumith Abeysinghe includes Susantha Ratnayake, Dian Gomez, Dr. Prasanna Gunasena and Prof. Jagath Wellawatte.

“There have been instances where subject ministers appointed persons of their choice to state institutions that came under their purview without going through nominations submitted by the committee as the relevant Acts allow them to do so,” he said, pointing out that the committee only could nominate persons to the jobs but did not have any appointing powers.
