A lottery winner who hit a Rs. 22.9 million jackpot only weeks ago has been remanded after he was found to be in possession of 1.6 grams of heroin, police said.

They said the suspect, a father of two, had taken to drugs after he won the jackpot. He was working as a labourer at the Kandy Municipal Council.

Two weeks ago, he received Rs 22.5 million after Rs. 400,000 from the prize money was deducted for the President’s Fund.

Not long after he collected his prize money, he became addicted to heroin due to the influence of some friends, the police said.

A Katugastota Crimes Division police team arrested the suspect and two of his freinds this week during a raid.

Kandy Magistrate Duminda Mudunkotuwa ordered that the suspects be remanded till March 3.

Katugastota OIC WMM Uvindasiri is leading the investigations.
