It’s been almost two years since Cafe Nuga opened its doors on Greenpath, Colombo 3 providing the health conscious folks of Colombo with nutritious meals that don’t compromise on taste. From paninis, grill platters to smoothies and even dessert options, Cafe Nuga has a wide range of items on their menu even a few vegan friendly choices.

Stringhopper koththu

There are new dishes on their menu now and if you like Lankan cuisine above all else, they will fit the bill. Cafe Nuga now has a selection of stringhopper biriyanis heavily infused with spices and flavour that appeal to the local palate. The stringhopper koththu was mixed with a variety of veggies, egg and our choice of meat which was boneless mutton. It was accompanied with a coconut sambol with green chilli and red coconut chutneys.

‘Mulligatawny’ which originates from South India is an old favourite for many. The Mulligatawny at Nuga is a heavy curry flavoured spicy broth thickened with chickpeas, and infused with Jasmine rice. It has a slight kick due to the spices used and we would recommend it when you’re down with a cold as it seems the perfect replacement for the usual chicken soup.

The fish fillet dish is one of their grain-based options. A citrus marinated mullet was served on top of couscous and mango salsa. The fillet was perfectly cooked. It was a light yet tasty meal that left one feeling very satisfied.

The fusion hoppers, a personal favourite are usually served after 6 p.m. They come with one fusion hopper, a red hopper and white hopper accompanied with lunu miris and dhal curry.

We tried the fusion grilled chicken hoppers, which was basically a hopper but filled with grilled chicken. It was a delicious dish as the chicken had a nice amount of spices that were not too overpowering.

We could not resist having Cafe Nuga’s signature smoothie bowl–a blend of mango, pineapple, banana and raw honey topped with granola, fruits and nuts. We could clearly see why this was a crowd favourite as the combination from the tartness of the fruits, crunch from the granola and nuts to the sweet smoothie blend made a wholesome tasty meal.
