Tone & I’s ‘Dance Monkey’ becomes longest running chart song for a female artist

Tone & I’s ‘Dance Monkey’ became the longest running chart topping song for a female artist on the UK singles chart as it clocked 11 consecutive weeks at No: 1.  After 12 years Tone & I’s hit has surpassed the mark held equally by Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ in 1994 and Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ in 2007. If the song can hold on for another week, it would claim the Christmas No: 1.

Sting receives Global Citizen Artist of the Year Prize

Musician Sting received the Global Citizens Artist of the Year Prize on 13th December at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Sting who has sold over 100 million albums was cited for his support on rain forest protection. He also donated his prize money to the Rain Forest Foundation.  Sting also performed at the event.

 Ellie Goulding secures first Christmas hit song with Joni Mitchell cover

Ellie Goulding has secured her first Christmas hit song with ‘River’. She has covered the Christmas folk song recorded by Joni Mitchell in 1971.

Ellie’s rendition is a standalone release which was recorded for Amazon music as part of the Amazon Originals series. ‘River’ ascended the chart from 14 to land at No: 14. The song is the first top 10 hit for Goulding since ‘On My Mind’ peaked at No: 5 in 2015.

Rihanna documentary secured by Amazon

A documentary on the singer Rihanna has been secured by Amazon for streaming. Reports from the US indicate $25 million was paid for the worldwide rights. The film will cover all aspects of the 31 year old singer. The producers are said to have obtained 1200 hours film footage of the Rihanna which will be edited into the final film which is being directed by Peter Berg.

Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ back on the charts

Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ is back on the UK top 10 singles chart for the sixth time since the song was first released in 1984. This week the track climbed from 13 to enter the top 10 at No: 7. The late George Michael wrote and produced the song. “Last Christmas’ has been certified double Platinum by the BPI.

Rock legend Sir Rod Stewart comes in for criticism

Rock legend Sir Rod Stewart who scored a No: 1 on the UK albums chart this week with the album ‘You Are In My Heart’ came in for a rough time from Scottish nationalists who criticised the 74 year old for congratulating Prime Minister Boris Johnson for winning the general elections.

While criticising Sir Rod several messages posted on social media said he was no longer welcome in Scotland.

Taylor Swift to headline Glastonbury festival

Taylor Swift is to headline the Glastonbury festival in England next year. She is performing on 28th June according to reports which have been confirmed on the festival website. Meanwhile it is reported that Taylor Swift is exploring the setting up of her own record label. This is after the rift between her and music mogul Scooter Braun deepened as Taylor’s attempt to buy back her old album rights were rejected after the Big Machine group was acquired.
