The final Cabinet meeting to be chaired by Maithripala Sirisena ended on a cordial note on Monday with the President saying he was pleased that, despite unrest and agitation by “certain groups” and, at times, disturbances in the country, such situations were dealt with without a single bullet being fired.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also conveyed his gratitude and appreciation to President Sirisena saying that, under his leadership, the Government was able to build up  the country’s image internationally and gain full cooperation from the global community.

Although there were differences of opinion at times, the administration re-established democracy, media freedom and freedom of movement whilst fulfilling most of its pledges amidst various difficulties, he said.

President Sirisena also referred to political and policy differences they had experienced but said the Government collectively, as a team, was able to deliver on the most vital promises made to the public.

Ministers Rajitha Senaratne and Patali Champika Ranawaka also commended President Sirisena’s services, in particular his commitment towards bringing back democratic values and freedom of speech while promoting reconciliation and social integration among communities and religions.
