The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) last week said it would continue to push for the revision of the teachers’ and principals’ salary anomalies, after the elections.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said that, on the National Election Commission’s (NEC) request to refrain from strike action during election time, as it would affect the teachers and principals participating in election duty, it had called off its planned token strike on Friday (08).

The strike was due to the delay in the revisions of salaries of over 15,000 principals and 247,000 teachers who are without promotions since 2009.

In recent talks with the Ministry of Education and the Salaries & Cadre Commission (SCC), the Cabinet-subcommittee has approved the revision on the salary anomalies and directed the proposals to the SCC.

In the meantime, the CTU requested the government to pass an interim salary revision for the teachers and principals, pending the Cabinet paper being passed in Parliament.
