The Royal Group of Sixty Six (1966) donated the capital required to give four Perpetual Scholarships to assist students of Royal College. The cheque was handed over to the Principal, B.A. Abeyratne on Thursday by the President of the Group Rajan Gunaratne  at the College Conference Room in the presence of the members of the “Loyalty Pledge Management Committee”(LPMC), a committee affiliated to the Royal College Union and committee members of the Group of 1966.

With this donation four students will be supported with their education or sporting activities. The LPMC has already granted 189 such scholarships to students to support their education and this donation will go on to augment this number. Three of the scholarships will be awarded to a rugby player, a cricketer and an athlete in the memory of Ray De Silva, a prominent sportsman of the Group who passed away early this year after a brief battle with cancer, and the fourth in the memory of Sixty Six Group members who passed away.

Ray De Silva played First XI cricket from 1969-73, First XV rugby football from 1970-73, represented Combined Colleges in both cricket and rugby and won public schools athletics colours captaining the Royal athletics squad. He was a head prefect of the College.
