Junior Prefects of Sujatha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda completed a year – long school garden project recently.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Hasini Rodrigo, the teacher in charge of the Junior Prefects’ Guild, young Sujathians managed a small plot with several crops. They all were on cloud nine as they reaped the first harvest last week.

As far as the educational aims of the project are concerned, apart from “learning by doing”, young children were equipped with several “life skills” including planning and organising; working in a team; and taking responsibility. In the words of Mrs. Rodrigo, “Our aim was to build awareness in children of what makes a healthy diet and organic gardening. It’s also a good opportunity for them to become environmentally connected. A big thank you to Mrs. Dilini Colombage and Mrs. Ruwanthi Gunarathna for their support, and I’m grateful to the school management for the encouragement throughout.”

“It’s an unforgettable experience. We had a lot of fun every step of the way from preparing the soil, sowing seeds and caring for plants to harvesting” say Pooja Wassani, the Head Prefect, and Kaindi Gunawardane, the Deputy Head Prefect.
