President’s report names underperforming and high performance ministries

President Maithripala Sirisena has cautioned secretaries of underperforming ministries after a Presidential Secretariat report revealed that several key ministries, including Defence, National Policies and Economic Affairs and Power and Energy, had not recorded adequate progress in the first half of the year.

Acting on a President’s directive, Presidential Secretary Udaya R. Seneviratne has written to underperforming Ministries urging them to step up development work in view of their poor performance.

The performance report submitted to the Cabinet indicates that several ministries had not achieved the required 25 percent progress.  These ministries and their progress percentages are: Buddha Sasana and Wayamba Development (7 percent), Power and Energy (8 percent), National Integration (13 percent), National policies and Economic Affairs (14 percent), Economic Reforms (Non Cabient – 14 percent), Sports, Foreign Employment and Telecom (17 percent), Education (20 percent), Hill country, New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development (21 percent) and Defence Ministry (23 percent).

The report also mentioned about high performance ministries. The best performing ministry was the Highways and Petroleum Ministry (101 percent). The other ministries on this list are: Labour (89 percent), Lands and Parliamentary Reforms (82 percent), Justice and Prison Reforms (62 percent), Housing (56 percent), Megapolis and Western Development (49 percent), Agriculture (48 percent) and Media (Non cabinet – 48 percent).

The Finance Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry had not submitted their progress statements for review.
