With the continued rains, the risk of the spread of Dengue has been rising throughout the country.

On one hand authorities have failed to take steps to minimize the spread of Dengue. On the other the apathy of the general public, and the lack of co-operation from the citizenry have been the main obstacles to reducing the threat posed by this disease.

The disposal of used motor vehicle tyres in a careless manner has been one of the main contributory factors to the creation of breeding grounds for the mosquitoes in the city.

Our camerman captured pictures of the careless manner in which used tyres from motor vehicles are disposed of, at various locations in the city -the result, the rise of mosquito breeding grounds in the city and its suburbs.

At 3rd Cross Street we found old tyres being used to cover potholes providing an ideal breeding grounds for the Dengue mosquito

The Maligawatte end of Panchikawatte is lined with a number of vehicle spare part shops. Disused tyres are often seen lying all along this road
