Bishop’s College regained the ‘Ladies-Bishops’ Shield’ defeating Ladies’ College 2-0 in their annual 15th hockey encounter played at the Astro Turf in Torrington Square last week. A determined set of stickers from Bishop’s College stepped on to the astro turf with the intention of regaining the shield which they lost last year.

The wet turf didn’t create trouble for the Bishops stickers as they started the game in an aggressive note which kept the Ladies defense line busy all the time. Come rain or sun, Bishops lasses used their tactics which unsettled the Ladies defense.

The purple school’s aggressiveness were rewarded early in the first half when Devthilini Fernando sounded the board. Taking a 1-0 lead and from there onwards, Bishops tried to improve their score on numerous occasions, but the Ladies defense managed to send them back with solid defense tactics. First half came to an end with Bishops in the lead 1-0. Continuing from where they left in the first half Ladies College kept under pressure and their aggressive mode was rewarded when Aanjuli peered through the Ladies defense to score with a powerful drive to make the score 2-0.

Ladies College forwards and wingers combined well in the middle of the second half to invade the Bishops D area on many occasions but found in difficulty n beating the Bishops rock solid goal keeper, Thenuki Samaranayake.

With the blown of the long whistle the ground was covered in purple as the Bishops supporters swamped to congratulate their heroes for their fine 2-0 victory which made Bishops the proud owners of the coveted shield.

While the senior match produced a result the Under-17 encounter was a well balanced battle where both sides exhibited a high standard of field play and defense play. Lasses of both Bishops and Ladies played their hearts out to produce a result as the game came to an end 1-1.
