The five main political parties are contesting the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) elections to be held on Friday (11), with voting taking place across 47 polling centres in the area.

Postal voting took place on September 30. Those who failed to cast their postal votes on that day were given another opportunity on October 4.

The Elections Secretariat stated that all campaigning must cease 48 hours prior to the vote. After polls close, the votes will be counted at the same polling centres and results expected fairly quickly.

The Elpitiya PS elections had been delayed since 2018, after the Supreme Court (SC) issued an interim injunction preventing the poll, when a contesting party filed action against the non-recognition of its nomination papers.

At the conclusion of the case on August 30 this year, the SC issued an order quashing the Galle District Returning Officer’s decision to reject Petitioner, ‘Prajathantravadi Eksath Jathika Peramuna’ (Democratic United National Front) nomination papers. It also ordered the National Election Commission (NEC) to hold the election for the Elpitiya PS without delay.   Accordingly, the NEC issued a gazette notification on Sept. 3, announcing that the Elpitiya PS Elections would be held on October 11.
