An environmental organisation has called for a plastic – free election campaign ahead of the polls.

Centre for Environmental Justice Executive Director Hemantha Vithanage has called the Commission of Elections to take action to prevent environmental pollution during elections.

While posters billboards and hoardings on highways are a visual pollution, obscuring scenic views the campaigning materials mostly made of plastic have a direct impact on the environment, he added.
