Identifying polling stations, drawing up emergency plans in case of natural disasters are some of the preparations that have begun in all districts for the upcoming presidential election.

The plans were put into motion following discussions on Friday among returning officers, district deputy election commissioners, district additional election commissioners, officials of the election secretariat and election commission.

Preparing lists of polling centers, carrying out awareness campaigns regarding postal votes and ways to stop government events aimed at gaining political advantage were taken up at the meeting, the Sunday Times learns.

Colombo district Secretary Sunil Kannangara who will be the district’s returning officer said district secretaries were advised to make contingency plans in case of adverse weather conditions or any natural disaster during the election.

Mr Kannagara said they also discussed at length with election commission officers ways to implement the election law with the support of the authorities.

He said security measures would be taken up at meetings to be held at the Election Secretariat in Rajagiriya.

Polonnaruwa District Secretary Panduka Abewardena said while polling stations and counting stations have been identified, repairs have begun on buildings that would be used for election work.

He added that sanitation facilities, water and other basic needs of the voters would be looked into.
