A 25-year-old man was knocked down by a train while attempting to cross the track to reach another platform at the Fort railway station, a coroner’s court inquiry was told.

The youth who had got off at the fourth platform had tried to reach the third platform by crossing the railway track instead of using the overhead bridge when he was knocked down by a train plying from Pandura to Maradana.

The victim, identified as Sanjeewa Promod, a resident at Sangabo Mawatha in Nittambuwa, was pronounced dead on admission at the National Hospital.

His father Ananda Suraweera (58) giving evidence said that Sanjeewa was his only son and he worked as a marketing officer at a supermarket.

Dr. K.K. Jusari, who conducted the postmortem inquiry, said that death was due to injuries to the brain and the skull.

Coroner Ashroff Rumi ordered Fort Police to produce the engine driver in court on October 16.
