Breakaway groups from the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and a new civil society-led organisation named Tamil Peoples’ Council (TPC), called for a hartal campaign, coupled with mass rally, tomorrow in Jaffna, voicing key political demands of the Tamil people.

Some of their key political demands include demilitarisation, stop Sinhalese colonisation in North and East, bring Sri Lankan war criminals to face international justice, release all Tamil political prisoners and take immediate steps to conduct impartial, international investigations about the enforced disappearences.

The organisers secured support from various trade unions, civil society groups and university students in order to make the rally a success, posing a possible threat to the TNA vote bank.

Former Northern Province Council Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran is one of three Co-Chairs of the TPC. Other Co-Chairpersons are Dr. P. Lakshman and Mr. Vasantharajah.

Mr Wigneswaran who founded the new Tamil political party, is very critical of the TNA’s role, saying it sold off Tamil peoples’ political rights to the UNP-led government for petty perks, and continue to function as an unofficial constituent affiliated party of the UNP-led alliance.
