Create Lab Lanka, the premier coding and robotics school in Sri Lanka helping children to embrace a deciphering mindset and to persevere when faced with problems, successfully completed the finals of the Create-a-thon, the first ever junior hackathon in Sri Lanka.

The final round was held recently at the Create Lab Centre in Colombo 4, the company said in a media release.

Computer programming is regarded as central to the development of problem solving skills in addition to logical reasoning and this hackathon helped children to take their ideas from concept to a prototype. “The students in the present day must be able to not only consume this technology, but also to comprehend and control it, becoming an active part of this limitless digital shift,” Shibly Sardar, Learning and Operations Manager Create Lab Lanka (Pvt) Ltd said.

In the final round of the hackathon, participants were given a certain time to create a solution based on the theme “My future Sri Lanka: How can we help reduce single use plastics in my home, school and community?” They were required to create either an interactive digital story illustrating the problem statement and solution, a graphical representation of the concept using illustrations, flow charts or a simple software prototype to demonstrate full or part of the concept.

Students then engaged in a pitching session where they presented their ideas to the panel of judges. Participants were evaluated on logic and engagement, creativity, technical skills as well as their presentation.

The winner of the senior group was Ryan Shareef from The British School in Colombo, while Eran Sanderatne also from the British School in Colombo won the position of 1st runner up. Ahan Iyer of Asian International School was awarded 2nd runner up.

Arun Sumathiratne of The British School in Colombo, Mustafa Salman of The British School in Colombo and Nethsuka Muluthanrala of St Joseph’s College, Colombo 10, were awarded the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions of the Junior Group, respectively.
