The Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka’s (RASSL) next public lecture – “Power, Politics and Dress Fashion” — will be delivered by Dr. Priyanka Virajini Medagedara Karunaratne, senior lecturer in Fashion Design and Product Development, Department of Textile and Clothing Technology, Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa.

The lecture will be on Monday, August 26 at 5 p.m. at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7. All are welcome.

Literary sources indicate how fashion and politics were linked to each other throughout history. The relationship was highlighted due to the great changes that took place in people’s lifestyles following the Kotte Period in the 16th century. The objective of the study is to discuss how royalty employed the politics of dress to legitimise their power.
