Fire destroys 100-year-old colonial bungalow in Hatton

The assessment of damages to a 100-year-old, colonial bungalow belonging to Ceybank Holiday Homes Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Bank of Ceylon, in Norwood, Hatton, which was destroyed by fire on Thursday night, is underway.

The Company’s General Manager, V. Jayabahu said that, flaming torches used by two casual employees to chase off a drove of wasps, caused the fire which destroyed the historic wooden holiday bungalow on the banks of the Castlereigh reservoir.

No one was hurt in the fire as the building was unoccupied at the time of the incident. According to Mr Jayabahu, they have dispatched a team of officials from their office, to join insurances agents in the area in estimating the damage.

The 100-year-old colonial bungalow was originally owned by a British plantation engineer, which was later purchased by a local company. It was mainly patronised by British tourists.

Norwood Police are seeking the assistance of the forensic analysts to establish the cause of the fire.
