Two members of extremist group arrested

A person described by the Police as an Eastern Military Wing Leader of the now banned Jamathei Millathu Ibraheem (JMI) and a student of Oluvil University accused of promoting the JMI’s ideology within the university were taken into custody by the Ampara Police yesterday.

The so-called Eastern Military Wing Leader was identified by police as 25-year-old Mohamed Naushad Umar, a resident of Oddamavadi, Valachchanai. The university student was identified as 25-year-old Mohamed Ismail Mohamed Salman of Anuradhapura.

The JMI was one of the three organisations that were banned following the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

Ampara Police are conducting further investigations.
