The Government Medical Officers Association and the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) are planning joint action against what they called a string of irregularities in the education sector affecting doctors and students.

GMOA Secretary Haritha Aluthge said they met IUSF representative to discuss a common programme aimed at resolving the irregularities.

Among the matters discussed were the possibility of seeking a review of the recent court decision on SATM graduates and the proposed Quality Assurance bill.

Dr. Aluthge said the GMOA would discuss the Quality Assurance Bill at a general meeting next week and could take trade union action, demanding its withdrawal.

He said the bill envisaged to set up a 13-member body which would override the decisions of the University Grants Commission and the Sri Lanka Medical Council and therefore it would affect negatively the education sector, the doctors and the patients.

“We are obtaining legal advice regarding the possibility of reviewing the Supreme Court order on SAITM students and continuing our activities without contempt of court,” Dr Aluthge said.

Meanwhile,  the IUSF will hold a protest and a seminar tomorrow to create public awareness on the impact of the Quality Assurance Bill. The student union claimed that the bill promoted private universities.

IUSF Maheel Bandara Dehideniya said tomorrow’s protest would be against legalizing private universities and the SAITM issue.

He said the GMOA wold also take part in the seminar which would be held at the public library.
