The apparel industry has been receiving positive responses in the light of the “Matai mage ratatai” campaign to attract more workers in an industry that has a dearth of 40, 000 employees.

In the wake of the commencement of the apparel industry women employed in this industry had faced a lot of rebuke from society and they were branded as those working in the garment sector.

This situation is about to change as they would in future be perceived as vital persons in the economy boosting the country’s image globally through the apparel industry as the corporates take a plunge to rebuild the image of garment worker, Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association Chairman Rehan Lakhany told the Business Times.

Having carried out a study through the LMRD throughout the island following a quantitative and qualitative survey it was found that the image of the girl was a big factor in choosing this industry as their future career path, he explained.

This 5-year campaign, which is expected to reverse the bad image, is showing positive reaction from employees already working in the industry as well.
