He is one of the talented, young artistes, who introduced Sinhala rap music to the local music scene in Sri Lanka. Rapper Tharindu de Silva, popularly known as ‘Cairo’ also introduced his own flavour to the Sri Lankan hip hop fans.

Rapper Cairo...Tharindu de Silva

Cairo started doing music in 2012 with his colleagues but it didn’t pop as the major force.

After working on music for a while on my own, I released my first Hip-Hop/Trap Single in 2013.

‘This is the genre I loved since I was a kid. So when I started working on music, I knew hip-hop was my path and wanted to improve my style’ Cairo said.

His single was nominated for ‘Best Hip-Hop music video’ category in the Derana Music Video Awards 2015.

‘That was a great achievement, though I didn’t win anything.

‘I released my first album ‘Black Heart’ in January this year on all major streaming platforms. I have a new R&B EP called ‘Yellow love’, which has ‘Next-level’ R&B music that no Sri Lankans has ever produced. This was released just two months ago in May, but didn’t hit due to the situation in the country. It is getting more and more likings and hits in the web now. It is slowly growing into a major hit’ he said.

‘Most of the new Trap/R & B/Dance Hall music hits that you hear in Sri Lanka are done by me’ said Tharindu.

‘A decade ago, Sri Lankan rap industry was in a good shape and it grows fast into more competitive and energetic way. It enjoys a good place in the industry, even could compete with other Asian countries too. But suddenly bad luck struck and crashed down to the ground. Now it has kind of degraded’ he added.

We should create music that will be competitive with the music trends worldwide.

‘I’m sure that the music I make for myself and the music I produce for other artistes will speak for itself in time to come’ Cairo said.

The new music video of Cairo ‘E Mawathe’ will be out soon. It is an all different beat and style.

‘I have also produced music for the International and local artistes. Some of the songs are yet to hit the scene’.

Cairo can be contacted on instagram@cairorich and for some premium trap music listen on spotify.
