A woman and her eight-year-old daughter were killed in a road accident involving their motorcycle and a container truck last week near the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo’s Grandpass area.

The Colombo Coroner’s Court was told that the incident occurred around 2 pm when the woman identified as Neelage Bhagaya Arunodini (41) was returning home after picking up her daughter Dinesha Saubagaya from St. Joseph’s girls school in Grandpass.

Grandpass Police Constable K.S Kumarasiri who led evidence at the coroner’s inquiry said the mother and daughter were travelling from the Ingurukade junction towards the Sugathadasa stadium colour lights and the accident occurred at the colour lights turn when the woman tried to overtake the truck on the left while turning to right.

The child was killed on the spot while the mother succumbed to her injuries at the ICU of the National Hospital.

City Coroner Iresha Deshani Somaweera ordered the Grandpass police to produce the container truck driver in the coroner’s court on July 28.
