The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) last week, in a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena, has requested his intervention to suspend the appointments of 3,888 Sports Educators to the 10,062 schools in the country.

In a letter dated April 20, 2019, the Education Ministry  is recruiting personnel sans any competitive examinations, with only interviews and practical exams. The minimum qualification for these candidates is GCE Ordinary Level with 6 Passes and a minimum of 3rd place in a Sports event at District level. The government has decided to have 3 weeks training after recruitment.

The CTU letter said that, despite opposition from the Education unions, that recruiting such persons into the Teacher cadre will violate the Teacher Service Minute, which requires that, those recruited to the Teacher service have a minimum qualification of a Degree from the Teacher Training College or the National College of Education.
